Privacy Policy

Last updated: 24 September 2026

This policy explains what personal information Walk Kansas Online collects, why we collect it, who it is shared with, and the choices you have. It applies to this website, walkkansasonline.org.

Who operates this site

Walk Kansas is a program of Kansas State University Research and Extension. The Walk Kansas Online website is built and operated on its behalf by Square Lines LLC, which hosts the application and administers it under contract. Kansas State University Research and Extension decides what information is collected and how it is used; Square Lines processes that information to run the service.

What we collect

Information you give us

  • Account details — your name and email address, and a password, which we never store in a readable form.
  • Phone number — optional, and only used if you choose to receive text message notifications.
  • Demographic information — optional. You may tell us your gender, your year of birth and your race or ethnicity. These questions can be skipped, and every one of them offers a "prefer not to answer" choice. They are used for program reporting.
  • Your activity — the minutes of activity or steps you log, which trail or challenge you have chosen, and the badges you earn.
  • Team information — the team you belong to and, if you set one up, the names and email addresses you enter to invite other members.
  • Messages you post — anything you write on your team's message wall is visible to the other members of your team.

Information collected automatically

  • Sign-in records — the internet address (IP address) your browser connects from is recorded with your session and in our server logs, together with the date and time. This is used to keep accounts secure and to investigate problems.
  • Necessary cookies — see Cookies below.

How we use your information

  • To create and maintain your account and keep you signed in.
  • To record your activity, show your progress and award badges.
  • To place you on a team and let you take part in team features.
  • To send you program email and, if you opted in, text messages.
  • To take payment for registration, where your county charges a fee.
  • To report on participation to Kansas State University Research and Extension. Reporting uses the demographic answers you chose to give.
  • To keep the service secure, including detecting and blocking abuse.

We do not sell your information. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not build profiles of you for any purpose outside the program.

Payment information

Where a registration fee applies, payment is handled by Stripe. When you pay, you are taken to a page hosted by Stripe to enter your card details. Your card number, expiry date and security code are never sent to, seen by, or stored on Walk Kansas Online systems. We record only whether the payment succeeded and a reference for it. Some counties instead accept payment by check or through their own separate payment page; in those cases no card details pass through this site either.

Who we share information with

We share information only with the service providers needed to run the site, and only to the extent they need it:

  • Linode (Akamai Technologies) — hosts the application and its data.
  • Amazon Web Services — delivers email sent by the program.
  • Stripe — processes card payments.
  • Vonage — delivers text message notifications, if you opted in.

We also share participation information with Kansas State University Research and Extension, which runs the program, and with the county extension office administering your group.

We will disclose information if we are legally required to do so, such as in response to a valid subpoena or court order.

Cookies

This site uses two cookies, both strictly necessary for it to work: one that keeps you signed in, and one that protects forms against cross-site request forgery. Both are set by this site only, are marked Secure, and are not used to track you.

We use no analytics, no advertising pixels and no third-party trackers of any kind.

Where your information is stored

All information is stored and processed in the United States. It is not transferred outside the United States.

How long we keep it

Account and activity records are kept for as long as the program needs them, so that participants can see past years and so Kansas State University Research and Extension can report on participation over time. If you would like your account and information removed, contact us using the details below.

Your choices

  • Demographic questions are optional. You can leave them blank or choose "prefer not to answer".
  • Text messages are opt-in. You only receive them if you provide a phone number and turn them on, and you can turn them off at any time.
  • You can review and change your name, email address, phone number and demographic answers at any time from your account settings.
  • You can ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete your account. Contact us using the details below.

How we protect your information

All traffic to this site is encrypted in transit using HTTPS. Passwords are stored only as salted one-way hashes and are never readable by us. Accounts may be protected with multi-factor authentication, and administrative sessions end automatically after a period of inactivity. Access to the systems holding your information is limited to the staff who need it.

No service can promise perfect security, but we take these measures seriously and review them regularly.

Accessibility

We test this site against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and publish a conformance report. If you encounter a barrier using this site, please tell us using the contact details below and we will work to fix it.

Children

Walk Kansas Online is intended for adults. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us using the details below and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be communicated through the program.
